Erichsen Lacquer & Paint Testing Machine Model 202EM
The simple to operate Erichsen Model 202 EM Lacquer and Paint testing machine is designed for quality management of protective paints and different types of coatings.
The Erichsen Model 202 EM lacquer and paint testing machine features an electromotive drive equipped with a laterally opened test head, test tool in accordance with DIN EN ISO 1520, electric installation for connecting the illumination of the microscope as well as a digital display for the acquisition of the ERICHSEN cupping value, with an integrated preselection counter for setting the maximum cupping value required.
The machine is a valuable tool for quality control, both for producers of paints and coating materials as well as for end users.
Simple to operate, the testing equipment is used for rapid and accurate measurement of the elongation and adhesion properties of protective paints and coatings of all types using the Erichsen cupping test in accordance with DIN EN ISO 1520, BS 3900 : Part E4, NF T 30-019 and SIS 18 41 77, on sheetmetal specimens up to 1.5mm thick and 100mm wide.
The ERICHSEN cupping test provides valuable information on the suitability of a coating material for any application. For instance, low cupping test values mean that the coated product may not withstand elongation stresses, resulting in corrosion of the substrate.
Erichsen Model 525 Adhesion Tester
The Erichsen Model 525 Adhesion Tester measures adhesion using the adhesion test according to ASTM D 4541). All coating materials to which a test cylinder can be stuck with existing adhesives can be examined.
The apparatus is entirely mechanical and requires no electrical supply, which makes it particularly suitable for applications in the field requiring mobile equipment.
Model 525 is of robust construction and easy to operate making it ideal for applications under severe operating conditions.
Erichsen Bead Test Instrument Model 227
The Erichsen Model 227 Bead Test Instrument enables the quantitative assessment of the technological properties of stamping paints and plastic coatings on cylindrical standard cups. The instrument is designed to produce stresses comparable to those which occur in practice and is particularly suited for use in the development of high quality stamping paints.
Stamped out metal containers, such as shoe polish tins, feature a bead rolled into the vertical wall on the container that serves to position the lid. It is well known that the stamping paint at the crest of this bead is most susceptible to cracking and peeling. This is due to this area’s higher degree of deformation.
Erichsen Brightness Testing Instrument Tint Tester Model 527
The Erichsen Tint Tester Model 527, has been developed especially for brightness measurement of dark, uncured coatings such as paste pigment applications on flat surfaces, to determine the tinting strength according to ASTM D 3265 and ASTM D 2745. Besides this special application, the instrument can also be used as a standard reflection photometer to measure the brightness of solid substrates (coatings, paper, plastics, etc.) according to ASTM E 97.
Erichsen Conical Mandrel Bending Tester Model 312
The mandrel bending test is a commonly used testing method for assessing the flexibility and the adhesion properties of coatings when these are subjected to bending stresses.
Testing with the Erichsen Conical Mandrel Bending Tester Model 312 determines the largest diameter of the cone at which the coating shows cracking or flaking after bending.
The conical mandrel bending tester Model 312 is a compact, robust instrument made of enameled steel which is suitable for table-top use. The conical mandrel and the pivoted pressure roller running parallel to the surface of the cone are made of stainless steel. The clamping device is equipped with a cam lever which ensures rapid and uncomplicated change of specimens.
Erichsen Cupping & Deep Drawing Cup Test Machine Model 212
The Erichsen Model 212 is a fully automatic cupping and deep-drawing cup test machine for testing the ductility of coated, ferrous and non-ferrous metals (e.g. stamping paints, lacquered, plastic coated or electroplated materials). The testing machine is provided with an electro-hydraulic drive, a maximum drawing force of 100 kN as well as digital displays indicating the drawing force, the blank holding force and the drawing punch displacement.
When manufacturing deep-drawn products the ingoing material is deformed in all three coordinating planes. The surface coating should not be defective, thus avoiding subsequent corrosion. For the standard controls and proofs required for the purposes of quality assurance, the Model 212 is particularly suitable to conduct cupping and deep-drawing cup tests using sheet metal of 0.1 mm to 3.0 mm thick.
The machine consists of a solid housing made of high strength steel into which the test aggregate (test cylinder with work piston, sheet holder plate and die) are integrated. All components are easily accessible from outside the machine, allowing the tools for the individual tests to also be changed quickly. The operating sequence of the testing machine has been designed in such a way that cutting of the blank and drawing and ejecting of the cup are executed in one single operation.
Erichsen Lacquer and Paint Testing Machine Model 200
The Erichsen Lacquer and Paint Testing Machine Model 200 is used for the Erichsen Cupping Test in accordance with DIN ISO 1520, ISO 1520, BS 3900: Part E4, NF T 30-019 and SIS 18 41 77 on coated sheet metal, with a tensile strength of 400 N/mm², up to 1.25 mm thick and from 70 – 90 mm wide.
The painted or otherwise coated sheet metal specimen is drawn into a die using a spherical nose punch, thus stretching the material until the coating cracks or peels off. The depth to which the material has been drawn by the punch when the coating fails is the measure of the quality of the paint or coating material and relates to the elongation and adhesive properties.
This simple, hand-operated Testing Machine is particularly suitable for quality control on lacquers, paints, plastic coatings and enamels in smaller establishments.
Erichsen Cuptimer Model 243-T
The Erichsen Cuptimer 243-T is an opto-electronic measuring instrument for the exact determination of the flow time using standardised flow cups.
This measuring instrument offers a number of advantages to the user.

Erichsen Dip Viscosity Cups Model 322 and 343
Erichsen Dip Viscosity Cup Model 322 enables you to rapidly determine the viscosity of any type of fluid, such as paint, varnish, wet enamel, photogravure ink, dye and lacquers for leather, oil, fat and foodstuffs.
The cup is totally immersed into and completely filled with the substance to be measured. It is then lifted out quickly, and simultaneously the stopwatch is started. The time in seconds required for completely emptying the cup is noted whereby the end-point is reached at the moment the orifice becomes visible from above.
Erichsen Mechanical Dry Film Thickness Gauge Model 233
Film thickness measurement plays an essential part in the use and testing of paints and coating materials.
The film thickness is a decisive factor in determining appearance, protective qualities and durability. A film which is too thin will afford inadequate protection and reduced hiding power. For this reason, technical specifications stipulate minimum film thickness and regular controls must be carried out to ensure that these values are consistent. But, an excessively thick film causes costs to increase. Further, thicker coatings do not always mean an improvement in properties. For example, thick coatings have longer drying times.
The physical and mechanical properties of a coating are directly dependent on the film thickness. If meaningful testing is to be conducted, the film thickness must therefore be uniform. Wet film thickness gauges are used to check freshly applied coatings and can also be used to calculate the resulting dry film thickness. If deviations from the specified value are detected, corrective measures can be taken immediately. Dry film thickness gauges are used to check finished coatings.

Erichsen Drying Time Tester Model 415
The Erichsen Drying Time Tester Model 415, is intended for use in the determination of the degree of dryness of coatings in accordance with DIN 53 150 (modified Bandow-Wolff method).
Erichsen Ear Testing Instrument Model 126C
The Erichsen Ear Measuring Instrument Model 126 C is used for the axial measurement of deep-drawn cups and raw cans.
It consists of a positionable turntable and a measuring head with a vertically positioned length caliper. The height profile of the test specimen is recorded along its circumference within one revolution and the earing being the result of the sheet metal texture and the deep-drawing process, is determined.
The specimen is fastened to the turntable by a magnet and centered by coordinated pins. The measuring head is infinitely variable and can be adjusted for different circumferences and heights of specimens reaching in each case the lowest and the highest value in a rapid and reproducible manner by means of the adjustable pins. Measuring is a fully automated process in which the measuring wheel works pneumatically. After the measuring process has been completed the measuring wheel folds away to enable a fast and easy change of the specimen. All real-time processes of the measurement and the automatic test sequence are executed inside the instrument.
Visualisation and evaluation procedures which are not real-time relevant, are relocated via network on a separate PC. Simple operations like the start of measurement, abort of measurement, etc., can be carried out by means of a key at the instrument. An illuminated LC display shows the state of the instrument and additionally supplies messages. Further operations as well as the complete test administration and evaluation are effected by the appropriate program on a PC connected to the measuring instrument via network. The convenient test evaluation in accordance with DIN EN 1669 offers comprehensive computational and administrative functions (not only in the field of deep-drawing processes). By virtue of the detailed determination of parameters, conclusions can be drawn concerning the wear of the tools and the quality of the deep-drawing material used. Because of its flexible concept, this instrument is also applicable for all similar tasks.
Erichsen Wasag Film Applicator Model 288
This film applicator is supplied with the blade at a fixed gap height, selected from a range between 15 and 2000 µm.
The Erichsen Wasag Film Applicator Model 288 is provided with two working edges so that several theoretical film thickness can be applied with a single instrument.
Reference Class:
All versions of Models 288 and 360 are supplied with a Manufacturer’s Certificate M in accordance with DIN 55350-18 that includes among others the Gap heights (comparison of setting/actual values), evenness and roughness of the working edge, product identification, test equipments used with calibration status, date, name of inspector.
Erichsen Viscosity Cups Model 243
Viscosity cups remain the most important quick and simple method to measure the consistency of fluids in the laboratory and in production. Viscosity cups are, however, only suitable for lower viscosities and not for highly viscous substances such as pastes, etc. The most accurate results are achieved with fluids within the range complying with Newton’s Law.
Viscosity Cups consist of a hollow cylinder which terminate in a nozzle in the bottom. Excess fluid is collected in a gutter channel.
In general, the Viscosity Cups are made of anodised aluminium and the nozzles of stainless steel. Only the low price model 243/I is made of Phenol resin (but still with stainless steel nozzle).
There is a wide range of Erichsen viscosity cups manufactured to meet international standards and methods including ISO 2431
EN ISO 2431, DIN 53 211, SNV 37 110, SAS 184 115 and ASTM D1200.
Erichsen Grindometer (Hegman Gauge) Model 232
The Erichsen Grindometer acc. to Hegman, Model 232, was developed specifically to establish the fineness of grind of coating materials.
Grindometer testing instruments are used to produce a liquid wedge-shaped specimen of the test substance, which can be easily examined visually where the grain size is larger than the local dimensions of the wedge channel. A reading of the appropriate channel depth is taken at the boundary between the uneven and smooth surface areas of the sample to determine the fineness of grind.
The Erichsen Grindometer acc. to Hegman, Model 232 consists of a block of hardened steel specially treated to ensure dimensional stability. Two precisely defined, wedge-shaped channels are cut into the block with the depth of each channel measured on a µm scale engraved into one of the longitudinal sides (length 125mm) of the block. The corresponding Hegman scale (HS) is shown on the opposite side.
In addition to the standard version with scale combination Hegman/µm, versions with other scale combinations (a maximum of two, alternatively from Hegman/µm/North/mils/FSPT) are available on request.
Grindometers are suitable for measuring ranges 15/ 25/ 50 and 100 µm. A straightedge scraper for applying the test material is also included with the instrument.
Erichsen Paint Inspection Gauge Model 455
The Erichsen Paint Inspection Gauge Model 455 is a paint inspection gauge which is suitable for use wherever conventional electro-magnetic measuring techniques are ineffective, namely for coatings on wood, concrete, plastics and other non-metallic substrates.
Erichsen Pycnometer Model 290
Erichsen Pycnometer Model 290 is used to establish the density of coating materials and other fluids and paste products.
The Pycnometer container is filled with fluid. The difference in weight between the empty and full Pycnometer and it internal volume enables the density to be calculated.
The Pycnometers consist of a container and a
lid with an overflow hole. There are two versions
of Pycnometers available:
Instruments made of anodized aluminium and
Instruments made of stainless steel
each with a volume of 50 ccm or 100 ccm.
The standard Erichsen Pycnometers are made to a tolerance of 0.2 %. Upon request and at extra cost, all instruments can be made to a tolerance of 0.1 % and supplied with a certificate of the Official Bureau of Weights and Measures.
The 100 ccm Pycnometer is for general use, whereas the 50 ccm version is used primarily for paste materials, as it is easier to handle for this application.
Erichsen Sag Tester Model 419
The four drawing blades of the Erichsen Sag Tester Model 419 film applicator frame feature 24 slots. The slot width and the distance between the slots is predetermined. The slot heights vary between 75 µm and 1300 µm. Using the Sag test according to DIN 55 677, the strips of wet film are applied, preferably to a standard specimen panel made of steel. Subsequent to application, the specimen panel is positioned vertically (film strips running across the panel with the thinnest strip uppermost) and the coating allowed to dry. A suitable thickness gauge is used to determine the thickness of the thickest layer where no change is evident as a result of sagging. This layer is regarded as the flow index for the sag properties.
Erichsen Scratch Hardness Tester Model 430P
The motor-driven Erichsen Scratch Hardness Tester 430P is a universal testing instrument designed to carry out a wide range of tests on varnished and plastic surfaces to determine their resistance to scratches and cuts.
Single cuts, parallel cuts and – by turning the specimen by 90° – cross-cuts can be applied to test panels of various thickness.
The Scratch Hardness Tester 430P is particularly provided for adhesion tests using the cross hatch cut method (in accordance with all mostly required standards) and for specific plastics tests according with Opel (scratch resistance and writing effect). For these as well as for other tests, numerous setting possibilities on the basic instrument and a large variety of test tools are available.
Using the Scratch Hardness Tester 430P scratch testing can be conducted with ease. The test results are reproducible and well-defined.
Erichsen UNICOATER Model 409 Film Applicator
The Erichsen UNICOATER 409 is an economically-priced range of motor-driven film applicators designed for defined and reproducible application of coating materials on different plain substrates.
UNICOATER 409 film applicators can help avoid typical irregularities and inaccuracies caused by manual application of films.
In addition to creating an even and reproducible film thickness over the whole surface, UNICOATER 409 film applicators also allow the production of a large number of identical samples quickly.
Consisting of a compact basic unit equipped with a multifunctional applicator support for almost all normally used applicators, UNICOATER 409 film applicators also come with a glass plate for use as specimen support or directly as film substrate.
The specimens are fixed by a rigidly mounted clamp. The specimen support is fastened with a quick stop bolt, optionally on two levels to equalise different thickness/ heights of substrates/ applicators.
The drawndown speed in the range of 5mm-99mm/s can be set in increments of 1mm/s with the help of a coding push button. The maximum application area is 33.5cm (L) x 34.5cm (W).
UNICOATER 409 film applicators are available with multiple accessories to suit the needs of various applications.
